FAQ

1. WILL I NEED TO GET THE GOSLYN™ PUMPED OUT LIKE MY REGULAR PASSIVE GREASE TRAP?
No you won’t need to. The Goslyn™ requires a simple daily maintenance which is easily carried out by existing kitchen staff.

2. I HAVE A RESTAURANT THAT HAS 140 SEATS. WHAT SIZE GOSLYN™ SHOULD I BUY?
The Goslyn™ is sized to suit the kitchen equipment not the seating capacity. See our Sizing Guide tab.

3. DOES THE GOSLYN™  FIT EASILY INTO MY RESTAURANT?
In most restaurants, space is valuable. At Goslyn™, we have designed our units to be installed virtually anywhere. In most applications we can install the device underneath a three compartment sink or prep table. The Goslyn™ Grease Recovery Devices vary in size and capacity; this allows us to fit each application specifically to your needs.

4. IS IT EASY TO INSTALL THE GOSLYN™ AND WHAT DO I NEED?
While we do recommend that you have a licensed plumber install the Goslyn™, it is a very simple and straight forward design. Simply plumb the inlet to your source, and the outlet and silt valve to a floor drain and you will be ready to start protecting your pipes from costly grease buildups.

5. WHAT SIZE PIPES DO I NEED?
The Goslyn™ is designed for a 2” inlet, however (providing the flow rate is acceptable) you may use a 1.5” pipe with an adapter for the inlet. The Goslyn™ requires a minimum of 2” on the outlet.

6. DO I NEED A WATER TRAP AT THE SINK WASTE WHEN I FIT THE GOSLYN™ ?
No. The Goslyn™ is open to atmosphere and there are no odors to trap. If you want to retain some height in the pipe run it may be worth fitting a trap at the sink just to get a couple of extra inches of fall.

7. I HAVE HEARD THAT GRDS BREAK DOWN AND CLOG UP A LOT. IS THIS TRUE?
You may have heard about the timer and scraper type systems. The Goslyn™ does not have any motors, scrapers or timers to clog, malfunction or adjust. Activation is caused by the inflow of effluent, which creates internal pressure to expel the FOG (fats oil and grease) from the patented valve and into a separate container. Every time the sinks empty the Goslyn™ works automatically.

8. I JUST HAD A SEWER BACK UP EVEN THOUGH I HAVE A GREASE TRAP. WILL THE GOSLYN™ STOP THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN?
Yes, the Goslyn™ is designed to stop grease at its source. It is different from a typical grease trap because it continuously separates and, most importantly, discharges the recovered FOG. Because it doesn’t have to store the separated grease, it is always operating at peak efficiency.

9. I USE SOME KIND OF CHEMICAL/ENZYME STUFF IN MY TRAP AND ITS COSTING LOTS OF MONEY. DOES THE GOSLYN™ NEED STUFF LIKE THAT TO MAKE IT WORK?
No. The Goslyn™ does not rely on any kind of chemical, enzyme or bacteria. We recommend against the use of these harmful additives which are banned in most jurisdictions in Canada.

10. WHY DOES THE GOSLYN™ NEED AN ELECTRICAL SUPPLY IF THERE IS NO ELECTRICAL MOTOR IN IT?
When animal fats cool down after cooking they begin to solidify. The Goslyn™ has a heater included which will keep the FOG in a liquid state, which allows for it to be discharged from the unit.

11. CAN I HAVE THE GOSLYN™ SET DOWN INTO THE FLOOR (IN-GROUND SYSTEM)?
No, the Goslyn™ is designed to be set onto the floor (above-ground system) and you will need to get access to the oil container and silt valve.

12. IT SAYS THAT THE GOSLYN™ COLLECTS OIL IN A SEPARATE CONTAINER. WHAT DO I DO WITH IT THEN?
The FOG that the Goslyn™ collects is suitable for recycling for bio diesel. Most restaurants just pour it in with the spent fryer oil for collection.

13. MY GREASE TRAP HAS ROTTED OUT AFTER A FEW YEARS AND I HAVE TO FIX IT. IF I BUY THE GOSLYN™ HOW LONG WILL IT LAST?
The Goslyn™ is made from 304 stainless steel, the exterior casing measures 2.5 mm thick and interior walls measure 1.5mm thick. The Goslyn™ is built to be durable and last many years into the future.

14. MY GREASE TRAP SMELLS AWFUL, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT IS PUMPED. WILL THE GOSLYN™ SMELL?
The Goslyn™ has a solids capture basket, which collects everything down to 1/16 inch, and the silt vale enables the daily removal of organic sludge form the tank. Provided the maintenance is observed there will be no organics left in the Goslyn™ to decompose so there will not be any bad smells at all.

15. DO I NEED TO FIT THE GOSLYN™ IN A SEPARATE ROOM AWAY FROM THE KITCHEN?
The Goslyn™ is intended to be sited close by the sinks etc it is protecting and in view of the kitchen staff. There is no reason other than space requirements to locate it away from the Kitchen. Remember that the drain lines from the sinks could get grease solidifying in them before they get to the Goslyn™ if the runs are too long. Also remember to carry out the daily maintenance if the Goslyn™ is located away from the kitchen.

16. WILL THE GOSLYN™ PICK UP EFFLUENT FROM MY FLOOR DRAIN?
The lowest inlet we have is 10 inches to the center line from the floor. If you need to collect from a floor drain you will need to use a pump to lift the effluent high enough. Consult with our technical department so that we may specify a solution that best fits your needs.

17. MY RESTAURANT CONNECTS TO A SEPTIC FIELD AND IT HAS CLOGGED WITH GREASE. I AM WORRIED THAT IT WILL DO THE SAME AGAIN BECAUSE MY CURRENT GREASE TRAP HAS LET ME DOWN HERE. WILL THE GOSLYN™  FIX THE PROBLEM FOR ME?
Provided the daily maintenance is performed the Goslyn™ will maintain its maximum efficiency, which is capable of reducing FOG to below 100ppm.Because of this high efficiency Goslyn™ is well suited to locations where drainage is into septic fields.

18. WHAT KIND OF WARRANTY DO YOU HAVE ON YOUR PRODUCT?
The Goslyn™ is covered under a five year parts guarantee. If any of part of the Goslyn™ fails under normal wear and tear within five years then we will replace it.

19. CAN I CONNECT MY DISHWASHER TO THE GOSLYN™ ?
Yes, the Goslyn™ is compatible with most dishwashers on the market today. The high temperature waste is no problem to the Goslyn™. Refer to our installation guide for how to connect when dishwashers and sinks are both drained to the Goslyn™.

20. WHAT DO WE DO WITH THE COLLECTED FOG?
We recommend disposing the FOG according to your local City bylaws and/or your City’s garbage and recyclable collection programs. The collected FOG is not intended go to a Landfill.

21. IS IT TRUE THAT THE COLLECTED FOG IS GOOD FOR BIO-DIESEL?
Absolutely!! FOG collected from a Goslyn™ is considered  suitable feedstock for bio-diesel production and has value in the recycling market.

22. WHAT ARE THE ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE HEATER?
The heater needs a 115 Volt outlet. It consumes 1000 watts and it is not on all the time, since its built-in thermostat controls its operation based on the water temperature used by the kitchen. The heater helps to keep animal fat fluid overnight, when the kitchen is not in operation.

23. DOES THE GOSLYN™  COMPLY WITH INDUSTRY STANDARDS?
All Goslyn™ models meet and exceed Industry Standards of less than 150 parts per million of FOG from going into the drains. Goslyn™ exceeds CSA, ASME, UPC and NFS Standards along with IAPMO and PDI. Refer to our Certifications drop down.

24. WHAT IS THE REAL DAILY CLEANING TIME OF THE GOSLYN™ ?
Check out our Daily Maintenance video in the REsources drop down menu. It takes between 2 to 4 minutes of your time to clean the Goslyn™ Separator on a daily basis. Some kitchens need to do it twice a day, due to their own internal practices and the volumes they are involved ion. Some kitchens may flush large amounts of silts into the wash sinks and in these cases an extra cleaning operation needs to be done and that should take no more than ten minutes. If you do the proper daily cleaning, the Goslyn™  would be your best ally in a smooth and clean kitchen operation, while protecting your long-term investment and your daily bottom line. Remember Good KItchen Practices should be observed like dray scraping plates etc before washing as preventing goopy stuff getting into the wash water is always easier than getting it out again afterwards.

25. WHO DOES THE GOSLYN™ INSTALLATION?
We recommend you to use your own plumber who already knows your kitchen, or if we happen to have a plumber in your City that knows the Goslyn™, we would recommend him to be the 2nd choice. We provide, along with the Goslyn™, an Installation Manual, which is straightforward to follow up for a successful installation process. We also have a direct line for your plumber to call in case he has a specific technical question. It always needs to comply with the local Plumbing Codes.
